2024 LANCER BOYS GOLF TEAM TRYOUTS

Students & Parents-

We look forward to seeing you all at our 2024 Lancer Boys Golf tryouts that will start on Saturday, February 10. This is our 4th year of coaching; we anticipate that this will be our most competitive team yet, and are looking forward to a very successful season.

Here is the information you need to know:

Need to be Cleared

All students trying out need to be completely cleared with the athletic department. If a student is not cleared, they cannot participate in tryouts – there are no exceptions. Please check with the Athletic Department if you are not sure if you are cleared yet. This is very important!

Tryouts

Weather permitting, we will hold Day 1 of tryouts at Goat Hill Park in Oceanside on Saturday, February 10. Our first tee time is 11:45 am, and we have a total of 6 (six) tee times that day. We will be playing the Black (back) tee markers on this day. It will be 18 holes of stroke play. Please arrive as early as possible, so we can check you in, you can hit range balls, etc…depending on how many students show up, some of last year’s team members may not be required to play on this day – but we will ask them to walk along with the groups and help with scoring, etc…we walk at all of our matches, so be prepared. Anyone attending tryouts must have his own golf clubs, golf bag, shoes, golf balls, tees, etc. These are not supplied. Pace of play is extremely important!

IMPORTANT NOTE: We will determine who gets to tryout based upon skill level shown on the driving range prior to teeing off. If you are a beginner, or haven’t played much golf, it is possible that you may not be allowed on the golf course to tryout, due to limited tee times.

Day 2 tryouts will be on Monday, February 12, and will once again be held at Goat Hill Park in Oceanside, with the first tee times starting at 4:00 pm. Sunset is around 5:30 pm, so more than likely we will not be able to have all kids trying out complete 9 holes. The coaches will make a determination of how far along in the round we will count, based upon pace of play and daylight. After Day 2 results, we may determine some cuts at that point, and those students will be notified as soon as possible.

After Monday’s tryouts, the Coaches will determine what the schedule will be for the remainder of the week, and notify everyone on Monday evening. Depending on how tryouts go, and weather, we may determine that we need to extend tryouts to Tuesday. Those would also be held at Goat Hill Park.

NOTE: During tryouts, Parents can stay by the clubhouse, but are asked to not go on the golf course or practice areas to spectate or coach.

Our current goal is to carry 16 to 18 golfers in the program this season, but that number could change a little depending on how tryouts go. Per CIF rules, Seniors cannot participate at the Junior Varsity level; so we will only be keeping Seniors that can be on our highly competitive Varsity team.

REMEMBER!

  • Be respectful of the course and your playing partners. Inappropriate language or behavior may result in you being cut from the team, regardless of your skill level.
  • Fix your divots and ball marks, and rake the sand traps.
  • Pace of play is extremely important! You need to be ready to play your shot when it is your turn. If the coaches have to say to a group “guys, you need to pick it up”, that means you are behind and need to start really hustling (translation = running / jogging) to catch up to the group in front of you.

We are developing a strong team – we will focus on seeing season long improvement from all golfers in the following areas:

  • Course management – golf is not just how well you hit the ball on the range, but learning how to actually “play golf” on the course with smart thinking and strategy.
  • Minimizing / eliminating penalty shots
  • Dialing in your wedge game from 100 yards and in
  • Minimizing / eliminating three putts

Please reach out to us individually if you have any questions at all regarding this process. Thank you for your interest in Lancer Golf.

Go LANCERS!
