A two-time CIF Champion, and San Diego Section Player of the Year, Derek Stockalper is the lone CHS Basketball grad honored in the school's "Wall of Fame." Stockalper earned championship rings in 2000 and 2002, and was named the Section's player of the year in '02. Stockalper signed with the University of San Diego out of high school, and played for the Torreros for one season. After a brief stint at Mira Costa College, he returned to the Division I level at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. After graduating college, Stockalper played professionally in Switzerland, earning Swiss Championships with the Lugano Tigers in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014. In 2008 he was named the league's player of the year by eurobasket.com.
A dynamic scorer and passer, Chad was named the 2A Player of the Year by San Diego Section coaches in 1992. After graduating, Chad spent time on the east coast honing his skills at a prep school before returning to stand out at San Diego State University. Nelson ranks third in career assists for the Aztecs, trailing only the late Tony Gwynn and Richie Williams. in 2019, Chad returned to the Carlsbad program to serve as an assistant coach where he guided his nephew Jailen.
Christian "Goose" Peterson is the quintessential example of grit, toughness, and Lancer Pride. Playing as a undersized big, Goose dominated the competition his Senior year in high school, averaging a double-double for the season (20.1 points & 10.2 rebounds). Goose led the Lancers to a 22-8 season, yet did not receive significant recruiting attention. He decided to attend UC Santa Barbara, and earned a spot on the team as a walk on during his Sophomore year. By Senior year, Goose had worked his way into the rotation, helping the Gauchos to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

The game was played at SDSU's Cox Arena, and was the first CIF title game to extend past a single overtime.

This time, however, Carlsbad was led by Coach Scott Ogden. Led by San Diego Section Player of the Year Derek Stockalper, the Lancers defeated the Wildcats by a final score of 63-56.
